D-Arginine and D-Ornithine Metabolism

This pathway describes the general conversion of D-amino acids to oxo-amino acids by D-amino acid oxidase. D-amino acids can be found in some bacteria or may spontaneously form via isomerase/mutase reactions. D-amino acid oxidase acts on a variety of D-amino acids with a preference for those having small hydrophobic side chains followed by those bearing polar, aromatic, and basic groups. It does not act on acidic amino acids.
